28. Development of Stalk Model of Edible Maize Using Discrete Element Method (DEM)

In the edible maize harvester, the important is the detach system that determines the damage rate of the maize ears during harvesting. In order to develop an detach system, it is necessary to find out the major design variables that affect the damage rate of the detach system, and simulation techniques are widely used to analyze the influence of the design variables. The purpose of this study is to develop a discrete element model for maize stalks that will be used for the simulation analysis of the detach system. In order to consider the characteristics of edible maize, the physical properties of the maize stalks were measured and analyzed, and the mechanical properties were obtained from compression tests and 3-point bending tests using a universal testing machine. In addition, the discrete element model of the maize stalk was implemented using contact models and bonded models, the main parameters of the model were confirmed through parameter studies, and the developed model was validated by comparing the test results. The discrete element model developed from this study is used for simulation of the detach-system.
